Bethesda United Methodist Church
Bethesda United Methodist Church is a historic church building located in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. It was built in 1856-1857, and is a one-story, three bay by two bay, Greek Revival style frame building with lath and plaster walls and ceiled beams. The front facade features a pedimented portico supported by four square columns. In 1910 the original belfry was replaced with the present tower.[1]
The congregation formed as Bethesda in 1791.[2] A log structure was built on this site around 1815 but it burned down later during construction of the current brick sanctuary.[3] The congregation moved to Trinity Presbyterian Church while the new building was being constructed; services resumed at Bethesda in early 1858 after completion of renovations to Trinity’s former sanctuary.[4][5] In 1937 a Gothic arched recess was added to each side interior wall of the nave as an altar rail and memorials were erected at either end of church (northwest corner). The first two were dedicated to Revs William Miller who died during his tenure here[6][7] followed by another memorial erected by former pastor Dr C M Whitehouse[8], both now located next to doors leading into vestibule; additional memorials have been added since then including one dedicated 2014 which also honors members who served within chapel ministry including Rev David S Reed[9][10].

Mr. Gerald Johns is the principal of Bethesda United Methodist Church School. He is a graduate of Duke University, and has a Master’s degree in education from Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Johns has been the principal of our school since 2000, and he has been an educator for over twenty years.
