The song was written by Guaraldi, who also wrote all the music for the special. It was first performed in an instrumental version in the very first scene of A Charlie Brown Christmas, which shows Sally looking out her window as snow falls outside and listening to her transistor radio. The words were added later.
Vince Guaraldi was a jazz pianist and composer. He composed the music for three Peanuts television specials on CBS: A Charlie Brown Christmas, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and You’re in Love, Charlie Brown.
