The Finding Of Jesus In The Temple
Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors both hearing them , and asking them questions . And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers . [And] When [they] saw him , thy father [and mother] said unto him Why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold , thine father [and I] have sought thee sorrowing ! And he said unto them How is it that ye sought me ? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business ?

The Bible says that they went every year, and so it seems likely that this would have been a regular part of their lives. The custom of going to Jerusalem for Passover likely originated with God’s commandment at Mount Sinai:
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you [Exodus 12:2].
God also commanded them “You shall not appear empty-handed before me during your festivals at each new moon and sabbath year” (Deuteronomy 16:16)

When a child turns 12, he or she is considered an adult in Jewish culture. At this age, the boy would have been expected to begin learning how to read and write Hebrew.
Jesus and his parents went to Jerusalem every year during Passover season. It was during this trip that Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem while they went back home without him. Joseph and his mother did not know that their son had stayed behind in Jerusalem until they reached Nazareth and found him there waiting for them when they arrived home late at night after their trip to Jerusalem was completed.
They were worried about having lost him because it was so late at night when they returned home from their long journey back from Jerusalem where it took them two days just for the return trip there because of heavy rains along the way which made travel difficult as well as very difficult due to mudslides caused by heavy rains which blocked roads making it impossible for others passing through those areas due to lack of food or water supplies like gasoline needed for automobiles or diesel fuel needed by big trucks carrying goods between cities on highways across America today like Interstate 10 here in Arizona where I live with my family where we live currently since moving here three years ago now living happily together happily ever after happily forever more happily ever after happily forevermore

Now, there was one thing the family had not done. This was to go up to Jerusalem for the Passover. And therefore they could not have found him in their home town; they did not know he was missing. But after three days they went up to Jerusalem and carried out their search among the relatives of Jesus who lived there; but they knew nothing either of his whereabouts or his fate.

Jesus was doing what he was supposed to be doing, fulfilling his purpose and destiny. He wasn’t ignoring the Lord’s call on his life; he was simply fulfilling it in a different way than we might think when we hear that someone is “about their Father’s business.”
When Jesus told them that they knew not how they had sought him, this means that they didn’t know why they were seeking him. They thought that their motives were right, but if you’ve ever wondered why Jesus turned away from the temptation to do other things with his time after the 40 days of fasting in the wilderness, it was because that wasn’t what he was supposed to do at this stage of his life!

The family returned to Nazareth, where Jesus grew up. His parents were amazed at his wisdom, but did not understand what he meant by it.
