What Does The Bible Say About Afghanistan
There’s no specific mention of Afghanistan in the Bible. However, there may be references to other countries around Afghanistan that provide insight into what life was like there thousands of years ago. Let’s take a look at some of these references together!
There’s no specific mention of Afghanistan in the Bible.
The Bible is not a geographical guide, so there’s no specific mention of Afghanistan. However, it does provide us with a general description of where we might expect to find the country:
- The Bible clearly indicates that Afghanistan is in Asia. (Acts 2:9)
- We know that Afghanistan was once part of the Persian Empire because the Bible refers to it as Persia and describes its cities as being “in” or “near” Persia. (Esther 1:1; Ezra 6:2)
The territory of present-day Afghanistan corresponds with the dominion of the Medes, a group of people referred to in the Old Testament.
The Medes were an ancient Iranian people who lived in the territory of present-day Afghanistan, which corresponds with the dominion of the Medes. The biblical book of Esther mentions them as being at war with a group of people called the Scythians.
In some cases, it’s possible to assume that references to Afghanistan in the Bible are meant to describe something else entirely—like when “Afghanistan” was used as a stand-in for other places in general rather than just one specific place. But because there’s no evidence for such usage here, we can assume this reference is talking about our current day Afghanistan and not some other place (at least not on purpose).
Other groups mentioned in the Bible who may have had at least some influence in Afghanistan include: the Arameans, Assyrians, Babylonians (including King Nebuchadnezzar), Greeks, and Romans.

- The Arameans were a group of people from what is now Syria and Lebanon that often found themselves at war with Israel. Their capital city was Damascus—part of modern-day Syria—where Jesus Christ ministered for some time before his death on the cross for our sins. They were also known as Aramaic speakers (the language spoken by Jesus Christ).
- The Assyrians are mentioned briefly in the Bible when they conquered various cities belonging to Israel during its times of great weakness between 722 BC and 612 BC (for example, see 2 Kings 15:19). These events gave rise to several prophets like Isaiah who warned against further disobedience toward God’s commands so as not to invite more invasion from neighboring nations like Assyria or Babylon (see also Daniel 4:1–37). In many ways this history reminds us how sinful humans naturally tend towards self-interested behaviors which ultimately lead into wars against each other rather than being focused on God’s kingdom purposes here on earth where everyone would live peacefully together despite their differences such as race or nationality or religion etcetera; but because there wasn’t enough repentance happening after these curses came down upon them then eventually even these other nations ended up getting involved too when they realized how much wealth could be gained by conquering nearby lands full of precious metals like gold which they could use either directly within their own borders or trade away elsewhere depending on if someone else might need something else more urgently than themselves did today 🙂
It is also possible that Georgia and its northern neighbor, Russia, are among “the ends of the earth” to which God reaches out in Isaiah 49:6.
In Isaiah 49:6, God is speaking about reaching out to the ends of the earth. It is possible that Georgia and its northern neighbor, Russia, are among “the ends of the earth” to which God reaches out in Isaiah 49:6.
Both Georgia and Russia are close neighbors to Afghanistan.
Georgia and Russia are close neighbors to Afghanistan.
Georgia and Russia are both close neighbors to Afghanistan.
Georgia and Russia are both close neighbors to each other.
Russia is a much larger country than Georgia, but they’re both close neighbors to each other and to Afghanistan with their shared border in the north.
The Bible mentions other countries around Ancient Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is mentioned in passing in the Bible, but it’s not clear if Afghanistan was a nation at that time. The only thing we can say is that there were other countries around Ancient Afghanistan and they are also mentioned in the Bible.
- In Genesis 10:6-7, it refers to Togarmah as being one of the sons of Japheth, son of Noah, who settled in various places after the flood. It says he settled near Mount Ararat (in present day Turkey), which means he may have been living in what we now know as Afghanistan, or nearby areas like Iran and Pakistan (where many Afghan groups reside). He probably didn’t settle here until after his dad died though since he left with his brothers for an unknown destination before their father died.[1] His name sounds like an Iranian word meaning “shining metal” so he could have come from this area too.[2] However these are all guesses based on where other people named Togarmah lived instead!
We have seen that the Bible does not specifically mention Afghanistan, but there are many historical references to it in other ancient texts. We also know that God’s plan is for all of humanity to be saved, so we can trust that He has plans for these people as well.
