What Does The Bible Say About Trauma
The Bible is the word of God, and it has something to say about everything. This includes trauma, which can be defined as an emotional response to experiencing a severely stressful event. Trauma can be caused by events such as natural disasters, accidents, war or terrorism. It can also occur when we’re injured in an accident or experience abuse or neglect as children. Anyone can suffer from trauma and feel afraid, hopeless and alone. When we are hurting, it’s comforting to know that God cares about us and wants us to feel better:
5 Bible verses about trauma
The Bible is full of verses that will help you find hope in the midst of your struggle. Here are some of our favorites:
- “God is with you in your darkest hour.” – Psalm 23:4
- “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:29-31 (NIV)
- “You can follow me through any storm or battle if you just hold onto faith.” – Matthew 14:22-23 (MSG)
1. “I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.” – Jeremiah 31:13
Jeremiah 31:13 is a promise that God will give you hope and comfort. The Bible promises that when you have been through trauma, whether it be the death of a loved one or another kind of tragedy, God will turn your mourning into gladness. He will give you comfort and joy instead of sorrow. This verse is an assurance that if you are experiencing trauma in life right now, God can bring peace and hope in the midst of your pain.
2. “Say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.'” – Isaiah 35:4
God is with us in times of trouble and will help us overcome our fears. God will give us strength to overcome our trials, whether they are physical or spiritual. God is the reason we have peace and comfort even when things seem hopeless. God will come back for us just like he promised to do (see Romans 8:18).
This verse is a promise that God will restore your relationship with Him. It’s not just that He can provide emotional support; it’s also that He can give you strength to go on when life seems impossible“God is with us, even when we are not with God.” – Romans 8:31 (NIV) “His love endures forever.” – Psalm 136:1 (NIVGod does not leave us to face life’s trials alone, but he sends people into our lives who will help us through. We can call on God for strength and guidance when we are feeling lost or confused about what to do next in our lives.).
3. “But the Lord stood with me and gave me strength.” – 2 Timothy 4:17
God is always with you. When you feel alone, God is with you.

The psalmist here is comforted by God’s presence. They don’t really need the rod, but the staff is a metaphor for all that God has given them—his love and strength. The psalmist knows that, even though they may be afraid, they can trust that God will guide and protect them through whatever dangers lie ahead.
