[Intro]

This is the intro to the song “Not I But Through Christ In Me.”

Intro: Em, C, G, D

The words are: For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

G

G is the third note of the C major scale, and it’s also the seventh note of the A major scale. G is also the seventeenth note of the G major scale and can be found as its third note in F major as well. It’s worth noting that G is not a chord tone for any diatonic minor scales, but you may use it as an “extension” or substitute tone if you want to use more than one 7th in your chord progression.

Cadd9

The Cadd9 is a four-note chord with the intervals Root (1), Major 3rd (3), Perfect 5th (5) and Minor 7th (b7). This is a great chord to play over any dominant chords in your progression.

For example, if you were playing in the key of C major and you had a G7 in your progression, you could play this chord instead of just playing an G7 power chord. It gives it more movement and interest as well as helping to resolve the tension from the G7 before it resolves back down to C where we can start another cycle!

Here are some common voicings for this sound:

  • 1st Inversion Cadd9 Chord on Guitar – D – A – F#/G# – B

D

D is the root chord of the song. It’s also a II chord in the key of G, which means it’s a minor chord. The VI chord in the key is A, so D is V (dominant) to A and IV (subdominant) to Bb.

This one’s easy: D is not only a second inversion of G, but it’s also its own second inversion!

[Verse 1]

This is the first verse. It’s a little long, but you can get through it. You’re not perfect and no one is. Press on through your struggles and forget what lies behind you, because the light at the end of the tunnel is worth it! Strain forward toward that prize in heaven, toward Christ Jesus our Lord! This upward call to God in Christ Jesus—it’s why we do what we do, why we walk this road: for His glory alone!

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

In the second half of verse 16, Paul says that he is not perfect. He goes on to say that his pressing on toward perfection is a result of Christ making him His own.

Paul’s repeated use of the phrase “not I but Christ in me” emphasizes our proper relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the author and finisher of our faith (see Philippians 1:6). We can only do what we’re doing through Him—not ourselves or any other person or thing (Isaiah 64:7).

We are not perfect. But by God’s grace we can press on toward becoming more like Him each day (Philippians 3:12), because He has made us His own!

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; but where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there must be confusion and every vile practice.

D G

D G is the same as Dmaj7

D G is the same as Dmaj9

D G is the same as Dmaj7sus4

D G is the same as Dmaj9sus4

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

The goal is the prize. The prize is the upward call. The upward call is in Christ Jesus.

This verse tells us what we need to be pressing on toward: a specific prize and a specific call, both of which are found in Christ Jesus.

[Pre-Chorus]

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

[Chorus]

The chord progression for this song is as follows: Cadd9, D, G, Em, Am.

  • Play the Cadd9 chord on your guitar (place your fingers on the 3rd fret of the high e string and 1st fret of the B string).
  • Hold that chord while strumming a downstroke-upstroke rhythm on both strings with your pick.
  • Move to the next chord – now you need to switch to using your thumb to hold down the B string at its fifth fret and then place your index finger on its fourth fret. Use a downstroke-upstroke rhythm again in conjunction with holding this new chord shape and strumming both strings together with one stroke of your pick.
  • When moving onto playing D major, follow suit by using only one finger on each fret (the middle finger will go where all these notes are held). You’ll also want to move up one octave – so step up from fifths or fourths up into sevenths or sixths respectively! Again use an alternating pattern between two strings here too (downstroke-upstroke) while holding onto this new position with both hands’ fingers together now just like before but now across all three frets instead just two like before when playing G major – though note how it’s still only one single note being played per beat rather than chords like before which would have been strummed together instead

Cadd9 G Dsus4 G x2 (last time repeat last two chords)

Yet not I but through Christ in me, who gives me strength for all things. (repeat)

Yet not I but through Christ in me, who gives me strength for all things. (repeat)

The power of the Holy Spirit is not just for a select few, it is for you and me to do great things. The same Holy Spirit that was in Jesus and lived in Him still lives in us today! He came to earth when Jesus was born and dwelt inside of Him, empowering Him to do whatever He desired on earth – even raising someone from the dead! Our hearts were changed when we accepted His gift of salvation through faith alone; but now we can live a new life because of the work He did on our behalf! We are now empowered by that same Spirit so that we too can serve God by doing His will while being transformed into His likeness through our daily walk with Him.

Yet not I but through Christ in me, who gives me strength for all things. (repeat)
